Which Broadband Service Provider is Best for You and Your Smart TV?

Person using remote control watching smart tv

Picture this. You’ve just set up your new Smart TV – everything is plugged in, Disney+ is loaded up on a stunning high-definition display, you press play on Cruella, but then the worst happens. The buffering symbol appears on the screen, and it’s stuck on 12%. You reload – the same again. You reluctantly push buttons on your router while the kids are getting restless and your popcorn’s slowly going stale.

If this sounds like your worst nightmare, then fear no more. Here at Cheap LED TVs, we want you to sleep easy knowing that you can enjoy all your favourite streaming services on our best, cheap LED, QLED, and Smart TVs. And we don’t want you to worry about buffering, lagging and the bad internet connections that can ruin your movie nights.

So, we’ve done the hard work for you and trawled through the internet to find the pros and cons of some of Britain’s leading broadband service providers to help you decide which is the best for you and your household.

Sky Broadband

Sky is known for its vast selection of TV bundles, but today we’re discussing what they offer in terms of broadband. Can their internet deals beat what they have to offer in the world of television?

Pros

With an average download speed of 145Mbps (that’s Megabits per second), Sky’s Ultrafast Broadband promises to refund your bill if this falls below your guaranteed minimum download speed for three days in a row within a 30-day window. You’ll be told what this number is upon installation, so make a note of it and keep checking. You might be able to get some money back!

Cons

When it comes to Sky’s broadband services, where you could save money as mentioned above, you may lose it in other areas such as the installation fee. This is currently £19.95 for most of their contracts, so if you need your broadband to be quick and cheap, Sky may not be the service provider for you.

Virgin Media Broadband

Travel, music, financial services and even space, Virgin does it all! Top speeds and reliability is what they’re best at but does this come at a cost?

Pros

Virgin is famous for its high-speed broadband, which is why it is a perfect companion for your Smart TV, which is already loaded up with all your favourite streaming services. With a guaranteed minimum download speed of 565Mbps, this is the fastest on our list.

Cons

Probably the biggest disadvantage for Virgin’s broadband is that their speedy Wi-Fi isn’t available in all areas of the UK. So, when looking for your perfect contract, make sure you’re accurately selecting your address as the services available can change street-by-street.

BT Broadband

BT is one of the biggest broadband and phone service providers in Britain. The household name is known for having a wide variety of contracts and bundles – can you find one that’s right for you?

Pros

BT has a multitude of regularly changing deals, so keep checking and you’re almost guaranteed to find something that’s right for you. Their BT Halo package comes with an additional 4G mini router which kicks in if your broadband ever goes down. Perfect for ensuring you don’t miss a second of the UEFA EUROs on your Smart TV this year!

Cons

Unfortunately, BT is at the bottom of our list when it comes to average download speeds. Their top package, Fibre 2, has an average speed of 67Mbps, but this is currently only available in some regions of the UK. Their more widely available service, Fibre 1, has an average download speed of only 35Mbps.

Plusnet Broadband

The friendly Yorkshire-based service provider is known for its budget-conscious deals and fantastic customer service. Will Plusnet be your cup of tea?

Pros

Whilst they may not offer the fastest broadband, Plusnet often has some great customer incentives such as Reward cards, cashback and Amazon gift cards. Perfect for treating the family to some snacks to enjoy while sat around watching the TV with no worries about your internet connection!

Cons

Plusnet isn’t known for its choice of TV channels and could be unimpressive for people who want to scroll through pages upon pages of options. However, we’ve cheated a little bit because that doesn’t really matter. If you’re using the broadband service for your Smart TV, it comes fully loaded with all your favourite streaming services and catch-up TV apps – so you can start streaming straight away.

TalkTalk Broadband

TalkTalk has some of the best deals when it comes to broadband and prides itself on being “For Everyone”, but do these low prices come with some side effects?

Pros

TalkTalk offers some of the cheapest deals on our list, with starting prices from just £22 per month and no installation fees. If you find that you’re often splashing out on pay-per-view sporting events or movie rentals, then cutting costs on your broadband is a good idea, and TalkTalk could be the best place to start.

Cons

Most of TalkTalk’s broadband contracts are a minimum length of 24 months which is way above average compared to the other service providers listed. This could be an issue for TalkTalk customers because if you find that the service isn’t right for you within this timeframe, you’ll find yourself with a hefty early termination bill.
