LG Electronics has been one of the biggest tech giants in the TV industry since it established itself as a company. They have provided many monumental moments in the progression of TVs and, to this day, remain one of the most valuable manufacturers of TVs. Starting up and founded as Goldstar in 1958, LG Electronics was the first manufacturer, along with the help of Hitachi, to offer radios, TVs, refrigerators and other electrical domestic appliances to South Korea. Since then, they have continued to strive to produce the most advanced technology available to purchase.
The First Flagship TV for LG Electronics
The first year LG hit the TV industry was in 1966, with the first 19-inch black and white TV introduced to the general public in Korea. As its initial company, under the name of Goldstar, it went on to make more noteworthy technologies for Korea, including the first radio, desktop fans and even escalators. It wasn’t until 1998 that the company made another significant move to dominate the TV advancements. Until then, the company concentrated on other household appliances.
Introducing the world’s first 60-inch plasma TV alongside Phillips in 1998 was the breakthrough moment for LG Electronics and the company’s first high-spec milestone. This was a pivotal moment, and LG would continue to produce some of the latest technology we use in domestic TVs.
The plasma TV offered a new dimension to quality viewing and sizable TVs. It provided picture improvement technology to upgrade standard content to a higher definition, much like we see with more modern devices such as the XR Upscaling in the Sony Bravia XR TVs. The 60-inch plasma TV reduced the motion picture blur, fixing the issues LED and LCD TVs suffered in the late 90s on larger display sizes.
LG’s Breakthrough With LCD
Whilst the plasma TV offered the most crystal clear picture and vivid colours, many downsides and environmental issues came with the device, such as screen burning and harmful chemicals, which were dangerous when the device was sent to a landfill. Due to these issues, LG, like other TV manufacturers, concentrated on finding a solution to improving the use of LEDs.
Although LED and LCD TVs are popular and have been around for many years, the difficulty lies with creating a device larger than 50-inch without pixelating the scene and offering poor-quality images. However, in 2004, LG introduced the world’s largest LCD TV in full HD, measuring 55 inches.
Unfortunately, even with all the developments from LG, the LCD came with many disadvantages, including poor contrast, restrictive viewing angles and a high price tag.
The World’s First 3D TVs
The era of 3D was an exciting time in the TV industry. Whilst still continuously improving the quality of their LED TVs, the next flagship TV for LG came in 2010 and was the LG LX9500, which offered 3D functionality. It provided a more immersive domestic viewing of our favourite films, previously only available within the cinema.
This device offered ultra-slim dimensions and a crystal clear picture like no other device on the market. To experience this new technology, users were given 3D glasses. The TV also employed the new function of invisible speakers, proving a much sleeker design and an improvement on previous LED, LCD and plasma devices.
Whilst 3D TVs can still be purchased today, their novelty and popularity quickly faded when there was a lack of content, the requirement to wear the 3D glasses, and the device’s cost.
LG’s First Smart TV
LG initially explored the world of smart TV in 2007, with their first internet TV branded originally as NetCast Entertainment Access devices. This unit allowed access to basic web functionalities such as YouTube, AccuWeather, Orange Mobile and Netflix. This technology was later re-branded as smart TV, and in 2011, LG introduced further access to widgets that users could download.
Unlike the technology of 3D TVs, the smart features of LGs devices became extremely popular, and they continued developing the technology to what we know and see in modern devices.
LG’s Display History
The most significant moment in LGs display history has been claimed with the production of OLED technology. In 2013, LG was the first company to mass produce flexible OLED displays, which helped create curved TVs. This technology went on to help make some of the lightest devices and was employed in devices such as mobile phones and wearable smart devices.
Although other companies contended to dominate the market with OLED, LG has become the sole manufacturer of the OLED display. LG now offers the technology to other brands to install into their devices, making it one of the most successful developments within the TV industry.
