The Best Films in the World (That Were Totally Banned)

You may have seen in the news today that the Seth Rogen and James Franco movie The Interview has been yanked from cinema chains. The film revolves around two inept journalists enlisted by the CIA to pull a hit on North Korean leader – and fashion icon the world over – Kim Jong-Un. The Koreans called it an act of terrorism and hackers, who definitely absolutely categorically do not have anything to do with the Communist state, promptly hacked Sony Pictures, who produced the film. And then followed it up with terrorist threats directed at any cinema who showed the movie. Freedom of speech, don’t ya just love it?

Anyway, the upshot is that the major cinema chains ‘delayed’ premiering the picture, and Sony have now cancelled plans to release The Interview any time soon. So they’ve pretty much banned it themselves. And with that in mind, let’s take a cheeky look at a few movies that were banned – but were totally awesome.

Natural Born Killers

A Tarantino script, Oliver Stone behind the camera, and Woody Harrellson, Robert Downey Jr. and Tommy Lee Jones front and centre – what could go wrong? Everything. Natural Born Killers seeks to show the immorality of the mass media as it glamorises the killing spree of lovers Harrelson and Juliette Lewis. And that got the picture banned in Ireland, and a delayed release in both the US and the UK. So much for satire.

The Evil Dead

The poster child of the 1980’s video nasties craze was, strangely, The Evil Dead. Where other horror flicks were just plain gory for the sake of it, Sam Raimi’s movie was, well, actually pretty good – the story might be hokey as hell, but the shots were inventive, the actors could all act and it was even pretty funny at times. Even if it didn’t always mean to be. Still, during the moral panic of the 80’s any on-screen blood was too much blood and this now-cult classic was banned for years.

The Life of Brian

The Life of Brian is frequently cited as the best comedy ever made – and we should know, we’ve seen a few. Monty Python’s scathingly brilliant satire on Christianity is a joy to watch even today, but that didn’t stop Ireland and Norway from banning it when it first came out. Which just meant that neighbouring Sweden billed it as ‘the film so funny that it was banned in Norway.’ And that all but made it a certified hit.
