The Caped Crusader: Best Ever Batman Games

Batman: Arkham Knight is set to be released next month, and there’s only one way to prepare yourself for what’s sure to be one of the hottest games of the summer – taking up the controller, donning that cape and playing through some of the Batman games that have already been tried, tested, and proved worthy of his great name. So where should you start?

Batman: The Video Game

For the retro gamers out there, it’s time to break out the NES or the Game Boy and boot up Batman: The Video Game. This isn’t quite the earliest Batman game, but it was certainly one of the first on the scene, made to tie in with Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman and doing a fine job of it. This game sure the introduction of the wall jump, an original feature which helps you to really get into character as you take on the task of fighting down some of his most formidable foes. It might not have the graphics to match up to recent games, but don’t let that fool you – it really has stood the test of time.

Batman Returns

If you’re looking for some classic beat ‘em up action, then Batman Returns is the game for you. Released for the SNES and the SEGA Genesis as well as a bunch of other old school consoles, you’ll not only get to help Batman take down the Red Triangle Circus Gang, but also see how you fare behind the wheel of the Batmobile. Use it wisely!

Injustice: Gods Among Us

Maybe you’re getting a little bit tired of playing as Batman, and want to step into the skin of another great character from the DC universe – villains and heroes alike. If that’s the case then why not try your hand at Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game which will let you play as a whole array of characters including Superman, Joker and Catwoman. Of course if you only have eyes for The Dark Knight himself then that’s fine too; why not make use of his unique attack – summoning a swarm of robotic bats.

Batman: Arkham City

At the moment there’s only one game that can give you the full Batman experience. If you want to launch grappling hooks, slip in and out of detective mode and use one of the most fluid combat systems around then Batman: Arkham City can give you that experience. With around 40 hours of gameplay and an open world setting to explore at your leisure, so far this is the closest you can get to becoming Batman, at least for the weekend.
