The Future of TV Technology

Televisions have come a long way from when they were first introduced to the public over 70 years ago. In fact, nearly 50 years ago, the first colour broadcast was shown – the 1967 Wimbledon tournament. Now, we are seeing some incredible changes to the television industry and it has got many people wondering… what will the future of television be like?

Virtual Reality

One of the most ground-breaking technologies that is on the rise in the 21st century is virtual reality, which is normally abbreviated to VR. Some excellent examples of state-of-the-art virtual reality includes the Oculus Rift, which is able to create a 3D reality that you can explore. Similarly, the Samsung Gear VR gives you the ability to view your favourite Netflix programmes and could potentially signal the end of standard televisions in the future.

The Rise of High Dynamic Range

HDR, or High Dynamic Range, is another television technology that is starting to break into the mainstream, but not because it offers an external element like virtual reality. Instead, it ensures the image on the TV screen looks closer to reality than ever before.

The idea behind HDR is that it heightens an image’s dynamic range, which focuses on the contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks. The end result is that the higher the dynamic range, the closer the picture gets to real life. We are starting to see HDR becoming more popular, with the likes of the new Xbox One being HDR compatible and the newest 4K TVs that are being introduced are also HDR compatible.

The End of the Remote Control?

Remote controls have been part of our television package for decades, but there is an increasingly popular innovation that is on the horizon – Android TVs. These televisions truly are the overlap between mobile phone and television viewing.

This could be so that your mobile phone will be used as a television remote, by scrolling through the various options, or voice control will be implemented. The idea is that you can simply say what television channel or show you would like to watch.
