The Gaming Hall of Fame Expands

Today, nearly 40 years after its initial release, Space Invaders has been initiated into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The US-based museum has selected this title based on its longevity, cultural influence and the reputation that it holds amongst players.

This game joins titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Doom, Pac-Man and World of Warcraft.

A game released in 1978 by Tomohiro Nishikado, Space Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games and, for the few uninitiated among us, the aim of the game is to defeat waves of aliens with a laser canon to earn as many points as possible.

This title was a forerunner of modern video gaming and helped expand the gaming industry into a global phenomenon, as prior to this it had just been a novelty enjoyed by the few. It was so popular that in 1980, when it was released on the Atari 2600 version of the console, it quadrupled the system’s sales – a resounding testament to the popularity of the game.

Backgrounds for simple game
Space Invaders beat several competitors into this prestigious list, including Final Fantasy and the first generation of Pokémon games (which is a true travesty and something which must be corrected in next year’s deliberations). These Hall of Fame games become permanent exhibits at The Strong museum in Rochester, New York.

What could be next to enter this hallowed hall? Hint – it better be Pokémon.
