The Greatest TV Shows Based on Movies (Part Two)

We love TV, whether it’s a sit-com that showcases the best of the British – like The Office – or the latest must-watch TV from across the pond. In our previous instalment, we looked at some of the best movie-to-TV adaptations. We’re continuing that journey now, starting with…

Planet of the Apes

The film version of the Planet of the Apes is probably one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. It certainly has one of the best twist endings in Hollywood history – although it’s been parodied so often by now that everyone already knows what it is. Don’t worry, if you still don’t know, we won’t spoil it here. Six years after the theatrical release, Planet of the Apes arrived on our TV screens. Apes veteran and frequent Columbo suspect Roddy McDowall headed up the cast as the chimp Galen, who protects two human astronauts who crash-land on the planet. And the effects were actually pretty great for a 70’s show.

Friday Night Lights

If you’re a Brit, you probably haven’t heard of awesome American football drama Friday Night Lights. The TV show, starring Kyle Chandler, is set in a small town in Texas, and features the highs and lows of a school football team and their family-man coach. So it’s about as American as apple pie, Doris Day and 4th of July celebrations. The series studied American culture, concerns and realistic characters – which made it a critical hit, if not a particularly well-watched one. The 2004 film the series was based on starred Billy Bob Thornton. Whatever happened to him?

MASH

If you know what MASH stands for, chances are you grew up in the 70’s, back when Alan Alda’s Hawkeye was cracking gags during the Korean War. The series was based on Robert Altman’s 1970 classic of the same name and ran for an amazing 11 seasons, from 1972 to 1983. That’s longer than the actual Korean War – which only managed a paltry 3 years. When it ended, the final episode was watched by a colossal 125 million viewers, which made it the most watched broadcast in TV history at the time. Oh, and by the way, MASH stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. Now ya know!
